The Salmon and Steelhead of Drano Lake

Drano Lake is a part of the Columbia River and has been one of the favorite sites for fishing. This lake was formed by backwater from Bonneville Dam and has since then provided residence to the indigenous Chinook and Coho salmon.

Drano Lake is found at the mouth of the Little White Salmon River. There are available boats for launching along State Highway 14 that will provide you a way into Drano Lake. Aside from this entry, the lake also has a boat ramp offering anglers access to the water and its resources.

If you are interested to go fishing at Drano Lake, it is advisable that you consult first with the local guides. The guides can tell you what type of fish are common on certain months of the year and they can also give you tips and techniques on fishing. They can also help you with transportation and fishing gear.

Salmon, trout and steelhead are common in Drano Lake. On certain occasions, you can also hook a few sturgeon and bass. Salmon and steelhead are the most popular catch and even though fishing is open throughout the year, you can expect these types of fish gathering at the lake on peak season from early August till September. Sometimes, salmon fishing and steelhead fishing extend till early October.

The regular salmon in Drano Lake are the Chinook and Coho. The Chinook is a Pacific Ocean salmon usually divided into races determined by the time of entry into fresh water from salt water. The most common races are spring Chinook, summer Chinook and fall Chinook. The spring Chinook is the most popular in Drano Lake. The Coho salmon, on the other hand, is also known as the silver salmon.

Usually, the fish are drawn to the cooler water common to most river mouths along the Columbia River. Salmon and steelhead travel upriver and over the dams to the lake in thousands, an amazing attraction for anglers.

There are several simple techniques to catch these fish. Baits or lures are the most common options. There are also certain rules to follow when fishing to preserve the population of the fish. Normally, the limit is two fish, salmon or steelhead, per day.

Fishing is open daily on certain months, usually from March to June. Take a much needed hiatus, pack your fishing gear and head to Drano Lake. It will be an awesome fishing experience! Let us be your Drano Lake Fishing Guides.
